Moving in Memphis promotes public dialogue around transportation planning, facilitated by the University of Memphis Design Collaborative studio. The University of Memphis Design Collaborative (UMDC) is a joint venture between the Division of City and Regional Planning and the Department of Architecture. The Design Collaborative focuses on outreach through community development and design to solve critical issues and problems within the city of Memphis and greater region. UMDC initiatives revolve around comprehensive objectives stemming from public input.
The UMDC developed out of a partnership between the Memphis Regional Design Center and the University of Memphis.

The Design Collaborative is in the form of an advanced studio course. Graduate and undergraduate students from the Department of Architecture and graduate students in City and Regional Planning participate in the studio class. The interdisciplinary approach to the course allows for deeper thinking and greater problem solving.
Andy Kitsinger, AIA - AICP, is Interim Director of the UMDC and Co-Professor of the design studio. He has more than 30 years experience as a community builder with practice in Architecture, Urban Planning, Urban Design, and teaching.

Dr. Laura Saija is a Co-professor for the Design Collaborative. She is a Visiting Assistant professor in the Division of City and Regional Planning. Laura is a certified engineer, architect, and planner. Laura's research specialty focuses upon engaged research aiming to improve the relationships between communities and life environment.
